Dear Steven and Anting,

...graciously acquiesced to making an exception for Anting; i.e. he may take the exam at the end of the Spring '09 semester if he gets at least A- grades in the 2 courses that he is now taking; otherwise it would be to his advantage to defer in order to improve his background further.
I hope that this is a satisfactory resolution.

Dear Anting,

As I discussed with you at the beginning of the semester, you need to focus on your coursework and make sure you get As.  There will be significant consequences if you are not able to take your qual at the end of this year.
